A Memorial Mass for William “Bill” J. Pospisil, 96, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Carrier, will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church on Friday, January 22nd at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Aaron Foshee officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Gregory’s Samaritan Fund or Our Daily Bread through Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.
William was born April 12, 1919 at Carrier in the home of his parents, John Frank and Mary Plisek Pospisil. Bill, as he was known, died Thursday, January 7th, 2016 at the Fountains Nursing Home in Oklahoma City.
Bill was extremely proud of his military service in the Army from March 1941 to 1945. He was a Sargent tank commander serving under General George Patton in the Battle of the Bulge and other European campaigns. Bill received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle at Neumark, Germany. He was a true American patriot to his dying day.
He met Elverda Markes at a polka dance in 1946 after returning from WWII. They were married on May 1st, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Church in Bison, Oklahoma. He farmed his entire life at Carrier with his loving wife by his side. They had a top notch Grade A Holstein dairy from 1948 to 1964. They then established a cow calf operation for the remainder of his life. He loved farming and retired at 87 because his hip problems prevented climbing into the tractor. After his family, Bill’s most favorite things were farming and polka dancing.
Bill and Elverda were chartered members of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. They were the No.1 Oklahoma Polka Club king and queen in the early 1990’s. There is no way they could count the number of dances they have attended in Oklahoma and surrounding states. They loved going to dances and seeing friends they had made near and far.
Bill is survived by his wife, Elverda; a daughter, Sharon of Oklahoma City, and son, Don of Waukomis. Grandsons, Micah (wife Lora and children Carter, Georgia and Lucy) and Ethan (wife Krystal and daughter Zoey), all of Oklahoma City; sister Clara Wurth and her husband, Bill, brother in-law Richard Patocka, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill is predeceased in death by his parents; in-laws Louis and Lula Markes; sisters Agnes Lavicky, Mary Bray and Adella Patocka; toddler brother Johnny; brothers in-law John Lavicky, Bob Bray, Eldon Markes, Orval Markes; sister in-law Beverly Markes; nephews Jimmie Markes, Marty Lavicky and wife Ann.
Bill was a proud, stoic, trustworthy and VERY hardworking man. He deserves his eternal rest.
