Vernon L. Stevens

Funeral service to celebrate the life of Vernon Stevens, 96, of Enid, will be 11am, Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at the Mausoleum Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Rev. Devon Krause of First United Methodist Church of Enid officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home & Crematory.

Vernon Lyle Stevens was born December 2, 1926 to Lyle and Vernal (O’Dell) Stevens in Minco, Oklahoma. He passed away June 23, 2023 in Enid. Vernon grew up farming in Hinton, Oklahoma. He served in the Army 1946-1948 and was decorated with a WW2 victory medal.

Vernon graduated from Hinton High School and attended Oklahoma State University (Oklahoma A&M) on the G.I. Bill, graduating with a bachelor’s degree and later a master’s degree in animal husbandry.

Vernon worked for Oklahoma State Extension Service as an area livestock specialist from 1953 to 1985. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Pork Council Hall of Fame in 2009 for introducing pork production to Northwest Oklahoma as a revenue stream for farmers and developing new methods of production that were widely adopted across the industry.

Vernon was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Enid. He enjoyed hunting with his bird dogs and fishing, boating, and water skiing at his cabin on Lake Texoma.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Mae Stevens (Josserand), whom he married in 1955. Vernon is survived by his sister Donna Mae McCumber, of Hinton, Oklahoma, daughter Lisa Stevens and her husband David Winkler, of Arlington, Massachusetts, and grandchildren Stefan Winkler and Benjamin Winkler.

Memorials may be made to Oklahoma 4-H Foundation, or to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, with Anderson-Burris serving as custodian of the funds.
