She was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1930, to Ernest R. and Violette E. Baker in the family farm house which sat near the location of where the west gate of Vance AFB now sits - now known as The Baker Gate. She was the youngest of seven children.
-
When Vera Sue was eleven years old, the family moved into town because the Enid Army Air Base was already under construction on the family farm land. She attended Emerson Junior High, and since Enid High School had burned down, she finished high school at Longfellow.
-
After nurse’s training at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, she married Frank Henry Bunch, also of Enid, on December 18, 1949. They had two children, Frank Henry Bunch, Jr., born in October of 1950, and Deanna Sue Bunch, born in November of 1953. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past December.
-
Over the years, Vera Sue worked in nursing and in the automotive industry, but mostly as a homemaker which was her favorite occupation. She and Frank loved camping, boating, and waterskiing, as well as many years of square dancing in several different dance clubs. They also enjoyed many miles of traveling together in their motorhome.
-
Vera Sue was preceded in death by her parents; son, Frank, Jr.; siblings, Zella Fairleigh, Ralph Baker, Ernestine Malden, and two infant brothers, Lavern and Duane.
-
Survivors include her husband Frank; daughter, Deanna; sister, Mary Ruth Cooper; sister-in-law, Catherine Schalk, all of Enid and numerous nieces and nephews.
-
Memorials may be given to Central Christian Church of Enid with Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home acting as custodian of the fund.
-
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the many caring individuals at Greenbrier Nursing Home for taking such wonderful care of Vera Sue for the last four years.
