Tips to Enjoy a Head Lice Free Summer

Enid, OK – Summer is upon us, which means fun in the sun replaces all the worries of turning in homework, signing permission slips, and packing lunches. But Dandy Strands Head Lice Removal Service, LLC, in Enid, Oklahoma, warns that summer vacation does not mean head lice still can’t put a damper on all that fun.
-
“Head lice happen all year round; they don’t take vacations,” says owner Meredith Riley, who has 13-years’ experience treating head lice and is Oklahoma’s only Shepherd certified head lice specialist. “School being out for summer does not eliminate the risk of getting head lice. It can still be contracted while participating in fun activities with other children and family members.”
-
Riley offers these tips to minimize the chances of head lice affecting your family this summer:
-
Keep hair strands contained. Head lice cannot fly or jump; instead, they use hair strands as a bridge to travel from one head to another. Keeping long hair pulled up or braided, and short hair neatly combed, when around others or someone with a known active case minimizes the chance of head lice ending up on your head.
-
Use hair care products known to repel head lice. Use a mint-based shampoo twice a week, or lightly spritz hair with a mint spray daily, to help deter head lice from making their home on your head.
-
Perform weekly head checks. Because there is no guarantee a person will never get head lice, it is important to make weekly head checks part of your family’s routine. Weekly checks can help you catch an infestation in its early stages before it gets out of hand. Early detection is a major key to staying head lice free.
-
Riley also recommends that parents send children to sleepovers or away camps with their own pillows and blankets to reduce the chance of head to head contact while sleeping. Parents should also remind youngsters not to share items.
-
“While only an estimated 2% of active head lice cases are caused by sharing items with someone who has head lice, sharing items such as hats, brushes, or combs can pass on other contagious ailments of the scalp, so it’s never a good idea,” Riley adds.
-
If a child gets head lice, Riley says parents don’t need to panic however, they should act quickly to stop it from spreading to others. While head lice are not known to spread any disease, there are risks associated with their symptoms and many of the products used to treat them.
