ENID, OK - Historians and friends from around the region will be in Enid on December 15 for the official dedication of “The Trail,” the metal mural depicting life on the Chisholm Trail which was installed earlier this month on the south wall of the Garfield Furniture and Mattresses Too building at the corner of Maine and Grand in the Enid Arts and Entertainment District.
-
The celebration will be from 12-1 pm on December 15 inside Garfield Furniture, 205 S Grand. That date was chosen as it’s the 91st birthday of Enid native and Chisholm Trail historian Bob Klemme, whose likeness is featured as the rider on “The Trail.” Klemme will be in attendance and guests are invited to bring him a birthday card. Those who can’t be here in person may send Klemme a birthday card to the Visit Enid office for delivery to him on the 15th. Send cards to:

The 150th anniversary of the Chisholm Trail, which passed through what is now Enid between 1867 and 1887 and saw millions of cattle moved from Texas to the Kansas railheads, will be celebrated in 2017. “The Trail” pays homage to those cowboys and was commissioned as part of Enid’s Chisholm Trail celebration.
-
The celebration will also include the unveiling of a plaque recognizing Klemme’s efforts in placing 400 concrete markers where the Chisholm Trail crossed a section line in Oklahoma, as well as the many partners who had a hand in creating “The Trail.” Kelly Tompkins, director of Main Street Enid, and Garfield Furniture owner Russ Frazee had the initial vision and were sponsors of the mural. Paul Stone of Signs on a Dime created the art, while Art’s Custom Metal and Design along with Scorpion Coatings of Oklahoma brought it to life. The mural was installed by Dierksen Buildings and mural funds were partially provided by ONEOK, Inc, on behalf of Enid native Bert Mackie.
-
Special Chisholm Trail-related events will be held throughout Oklahoma as well as Kansas and Texas in 2017. Keep up to date on what’s happening at the official website for the celebration, www.ChisholmTrail150.org.
