Sonya Summers Tyau

The funeral service for Sonya Summers Tyau, 58 year-old former Ames resident, is 2:00PM Friday, September 24, 2021 in the Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Ames Cemetery. Reverend Paul Barber will officiate. Visitation with family will be Thursday evening from 5PM-7PM in the funeral home chapel.

Sonya Summers Tyau was born on March 1, 1963 to Stanley and Jtonne Summers in Enid, Oklahoma. She graduated from Ames High School and went on to study design at the Bauder Fashion College in Dallas, Texas. She was the third daughter in the Summers family and was a real tomboy when she was little, but that changed and she found the love for design. She started a small design business in her parents' basement, taking her designs to the Dallas Market Center. She also worked for Chase as a loan account manager.
She taught many classes of her trade throughout her lifetime and was loved by all her students. She fought acute myloid leukemia for five years and received two stem cell transplants from her sister Karla. She passed peacefully in her sleep on September 16, 2021.

Sonya is survived by her daughter Tani, of Lewisville, TX; son, Payne, of Dallas, TX (Caitlin); her mother and two sisters, Kim McCoy (Jim) and Karla Creason (Ron). She was preceeded in death by her father, Stanley Summers and sister, Jo Summers.
