ENID, OK - Here are some tips to help you handle the ice and snow in Enid. Also check out the Emergency Kit suggested by OG&E at the bottom.
-
1. Prepare for power outages and blocked roads. If the power goes out or you cannot make it out of your house make sure that you have candles, matches or lighters, a battery operated radio, and emergency food supplies and lots of blankets. Have plenty of food staples like crackers, canned food and protein bars. Having plenty of bottled water may be a good idea as well in case of frozen water lines.
-
2. Stay warm. Electric stoves and gas stoves that depend on electricity will be powerless if the storm knocks the lines down. Be prepared with alternative heat sources and plenty of blankets. If you have a fireplace make sure you have wood and lighters.
-
3. Don't travel. If you are on the road during a blizzard look for a hotel or motel nearby and stay off the road until driving conditions are safe again. If you are in town find a friend close by that you can stay with.
-
4. Stock your car. Be prepared with plenty of warm clothes and packaged snack foods. Beware of the engine running to keep warm, the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning is high. Keep one window open just a bit will help ventilate the air. Run the engine in short bursts to keep the car warm and then turn it off.
-
5. Create an emergency closet. Designate a closet to keep a bag of warm clothes for each person in the household. You could also keep your flashlights and other gear here. Power could be out for days so board games and cards on hand.
-
6. Blizzard Kit. Warm clothes and blankets along with: batteries, flash lights, battery operated radio/television, bottled water, toilet paper, nonperishable foods such as cereal or crackers, canned goods, a non electric can opener, a small cooler, candles, prescription medicines and any over-the-counter remedies you use regularly; and if you have young infants or toddlers - diapers, baby wipes, formula, baby food.
-
7. Shovels. Stock up on shovels and snow removal equipment before the snow storm. Make sure you know where they are and that you can reach them in case doors and windows are blocked.
-
8. Cell phone. Make sure your cell phones are charged and easy to find. Even if the phone and power lines go out you can get word out that you are stranded and need help.
-
9. Candles and Flashlights. Be sure you have candles and a flashlight with good batteries in your home and in your car. Don't forget the matches!
-
Stay indoors where it's safe, and warm!
