ALVA, Okla. (March 9, 2018)— The Jane Hartwig Early Childhood
-
Education Scholarship was established in 2017 to provide financial assistance to students pursuing an early childhood education degree at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
-
Hartwig attended Northwestern and received her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1958. She returned to Northwestern to pursue a master’s in early childhood education and accomplished this in 1971.
-
Hartwig was an educator for many years, teaching fourth-grade in Kiowa (Kansas), before moving to the Alva Public Schools where she taught kindergarten for the next 16 years. After she and her husband, Carl Hartwig, purchased Woods County Abstract, Hartwig retired from teaching to help Carl build a successful title company.
-
The Hartwigs pursued most of their activities by each other’s side and family was always a top priority in their lives. Hartwig enjoyed spending time outdoors working on the farm while harvesting wheat, bailing alfalfa and raising cattle. Jane also cherished many memories of hunting, fishing and boating with Carl, her children, their spouses and her grandchildren.
-
Carl, family and friends contributed to this scholarship in honor
of Hartwig’s life and the legacy she left for her family, students and community. She passed in March 2017 following an eight-year battle with breast cancer. The Hartwigs were married nearly 60 years.
-
Those applying for the Jane Hartwig Early Childhood Education Scholarship must be a junior or senior and an early childhood education major with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. To be considered, students must complete the scholarship application form through the Financial Aid Office on any Northwestern campus. The scholarship may be applied toward university-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
