He attended Lutheran Parochial Schools, and graduated from Riesel High School in 1945. He entered the US Navy in 1946, and served his country with the 103rd Seabee Battalion on Guam, receiving his Honorable Discharge early in 1948. During his service with the Navy, he was in the telephone communications system on Guam helping to restore telephone service after World War II, which then led to his career with SW Bell Telephone Company, beginning in March 1948 in Texas. In 1949, he transferred to Oklahoma. During his career with the telephone company, he helped with the conversions of manual telephone systems to dial exchanges throughout Oklahoma in the late 50’s and early 60’s.
