Many start fundraising with Relay following the loss of someone near and dear to them, such as Cindy Harber, the team captain of “Got Hope.” This is her 11th year to do Relay, her 6th year as a team captain and her 3rd year to serve on the event committee. “I lost my grandmother to cancer and my mom is a cancer survivor. We just lost my 50 yr.old brother-in-law to lung cancer almost two years ago. When so many friends and relatives have died or fought this disease it becomes very personal,” Harber stated. The saddest thing about her brother-in-law; he had never smoked a day in his life but lived in a household with two chain smokers.

“Cancer touches almost every family, it takes our neighbors, our friends, our co-workers and often times we feel so helpless, but Relay is one of the best ways to honor the memory of a loved one or celebrate that fighting spirit of a survivor!” stated PR chairperson Lisa Bland-Selix. Joining the Garfield County Relay for Life Committee as a new Co-Chairperson, Tammy Miller added, “I Relay in hopes that someday no one will have to hear the words, you have cancer!”
