About Presidents' Day

ENID, OK - Presidents' Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February each year. It started out as an unofficial holiday to celebrate George Washington’s February 22 birthday. The day became a federal holiday in 1879, when President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law. So Presidents' Day is actually called Washington's Birthday by the federal government.
-
The day is a state holiday in most states, with official names including Washington's Birthday, Presidents' Day, Presidents' Day, and Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday. Depending upon the specific law, the state holiday might officially celebrate Washington alone, Washington and Lincoln, or some other combination of U.S. presidents.
