Old Settlers & Twister Day in Wakita

WAKITA, OK - Celebrate the movie Twister in Oklahoma this weekend! On Saturday, September 14 the town of Wakita, where Twister was filmed, will be holding their annual Old Settlers Day/Twister the Movie Celebration beginning at 8:30am with an old fashioned pancake breakfast. Oklahoma storm chasers, will be holding their 3rd annual Bill Paxton Memorial Service as well.
-
The day will be filled with family events, storm chasing vehicles, and the Twister museum will be open throughout the day. Catch the parade, which includes the storm chaser vehicles, at 4:00pm. There will also be an auction of storm related items to raise money to help support the museum which is solely funded and run by the storm chaser’s Aunt Meg, Linda Wade.
-
There will be music at the Gazebo at 7:00pm. There will be food and other things to buy. Take cash because there is no ATM in Wakita. There will also be an autograph signing by Twister's EMT, John Rhyne, and flashback mom, April Warren, at the Twister Museum.

"Twister" starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as storm chasers researching tornadoes. It was directed by Jan de Bont from a screenplay by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Its executive producers were Steven Spielberg, Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Gerald R. Molen.

Since the movie, Wakita has created "Twister (The Movie) Museum", "Twister Park" and a "Twister Walking Tour". The museum is in the same old building that the movie people used as their art department, set dressing and location office. It is full, as they say, to the rafters with items used both during the filming and the movie premier.
-
"Dorothy 1" can be seen at the museum as well as movie posters, stills, autographed movie props, photos, collectibles and some speakers from the drive-in that they destroyed during the making of the movie. The museum has a gift shop where you can find a great souvenir.
-
The museum director Linda Wade says the museum gets visitors every day in the summer. "Twister" fans come from every state and from spots all over the world. The guest book has been signed by tourists from as far away as the Central African Republic and Antwerp, Belgium.
-
The museum is located at 101 W. Main, Wakita, Okla. The hours are from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Tuesday-Saturday running April to August. Appointments also can be made to see the museum. Admission is free. Phone: 580-594-2312.

If you are a true fan of the movie Twister then this is not to be missed. A trip to the Twister Movie Museum and a visit with Miss Linda is indeed a treat. She has home movies made during the time and can tell you so much about everything. This will be our fifth time to go. The parade with Chasers is always so fun and the people of Wakita are always super friendly and welcoming. We drive 3 hours one way just to be there. I enjoyed your write up. Thanks so much for spot lighting our favorite place.
