Nursing Home Residents’ Right to Vote

ENID, OK - Greetings from the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program! In last month’s article, we informed you that October is Resident Right’s Month. With the month of October nearing end, the time to vote is upon us all. As advocates, we support all residents’ right to vote and advocate on behalf of residents, to ensure they have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.

Federal nursing home regulations ensure residents have the same rights as any other citizen or resident in the United States. This includes the right to vote. Facilities should have a plan to ensure residents can exercise their right to vote, whether in-person, by mail, absentee ballot, or other authorized process.

If you or someone you know is concerned about the opportunity to vote as a resident of a care facility, please feel free to contact Steve Torres or Megan Kirby, Ombudsman Supervisors, at the Long Term Care Authority of Enid Area Agency on Aging at 202 W. Broadway, Enid, OK 73701, or by phone at 580-237-2236.
