Norma Jean Gilbert returned to her heavenly home on April 4, 2018 in Enid, OK.

Norma is survived by her daughter, Carol Angel (Underwood) of Enid, OK, and her granddaughters, Carissa and Alyson Angel, both of Oklahoma City, OK, and her close friend Worry Hays of Enid.

She is preceded in death by her parents M.D. and Cuba Hoover of Enid; her first husband, Kenneth Underwood of Maysville; and her husband Jimmy Gilbert of Enid.

Norma was born on February 19, 1935 in Enid, OK to M.D. and Cuba (Brown) Hoover. She graduated Spring Valley Elementary, Emerson Jr. High and Enid High School. She also graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in teaching in 1956 and later with a Master’s degree in Home Economics. Norma had the honor of being the only Garfield County Fair Queen in 1951.

She married Kenneth Duane Underwood in 1956. She began working for ONG as a home economics instructor. The couple then returned to the Enid area where Norma began her lengthy career as a school teacher in Lacey, Waukomis, and finally Enid High School retiring in 1995 after 26 years.

Norma was an avid reader and lover of history. Norma also had a love of horses, including her beloved thoroughbred race horses. She was an active and dedicated member of Enid’s First United Methodist Church and often volunteered at Enid’s District Attorney’s Office, a Kappa Delta Alumni and a member of the Enid PEO organization. She was a faithful DEMOCRAT.

A Celebration of Life service will be 2:00 pm Monday, April 9, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at the funeral home. Cremation and service are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
