ENID, Okla. - Seven of Northern Oklahoma College’s varsity sports teams—three at NOC Enid and four at NOC Tonkawa—have been recognized by the NJCAA for academic excellence, according to Jeremy Hise, Northern Oklahoma College athletic director.

Jets teams, based in Enid, included women’s basketball with a team grade-point average of 3.53, fourth highest in the nation; softball, 3.23 team GPA; and baseball, 3.16 team GPA.

Maverick teams, based in Tonkawa, included women’s soccer, 3.21 team GPA; men’s soccer, 3.14 team GPA, eighth highest in the nation; men’s basketball, 3.23 team GPA, sixth highest in the nation; and softball, 3.14 team GPA.

In addition, Jets student-athletes received individual NJCAA academic awards. The Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, recognizing students who achieved a 4.00 GPA, went to women’s basketball players Carley Frymire, Thomas; Rylie Torrey, Locust Grove; and Krisha Young, Latta; and to Sierra Elam, Oktaha, softball.

The Superior Academic Achievement Award, recognizing students achieving a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99, went to Kyndal Pulley, Newkirk; Lora Riley, Alva; and Doussou Ndiaye, Thies, Senegal, all women’s basketball.
Twelve Jets received an Exemplary Academic Achievement Award, recognizing students with a GPA between 3.60 and 3.79. They included Kiara Robinson, Sapulpa, women’s basketball; and Alhassan Barrie, Antwerp, Belgium; Casey Cole, Sperry; and Zach Rayner, Pond Creek, all men’s basketball.

Others were baseball players Blake Biggs, Broken Arrow; T.J. Black, Stillwater; Case Harper, Wills Point, Texas; Garrett Price, Glenpool; and William Sprayberry, Moore; and softball players Kaylon Dunn, Edmond; Kallee King, Oktaha; Jamie Lowrie, Piedmont; and Hailee Milburn, Mustang.

Twenty-two Maverick student-athletes received individual academic awards.

“It truly was an amazing year that three of our 10 teams finished in the top 10 in the nation academically and seven of our ten teams were recognized for academic excellence by the NJCAA,” Hise said.

He recapped the Jets’ athletic accomplishments during the 2015-2016 academic year, noting that the women’s basketball team and the baseball team were nationally ranked and the women’s basketball team went to the national tournament for the fourth time in school history.

Torrey sank 54 consecutive free throws during the season to set a new NJCAA record. She was named an NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention.

The cheerleading team won its second consecutive United Spirit Association Collegiate National Championship in its division.

Finally, the teams completed more than 10 different community service projects.
