UPDATE 3/15/13: Here's the latest info https://enidbuzz.com/enids-moustache-march/
ENID, OK - Help some great causes and get to spend a month not shaving!!! How often can you get away without a shave? If you sign up for No Shave November you'll have the perfect excuse. Learn more below.
In an effort to have some fun and raise money for local charities, I Love Enid is hosting Moustache March, a city wide moustache competition, and several associated events.
As part of the festivities, No Shave November will kick off November 1. It is $10 to enter and in order to do so, one must submit a photo of themselves clean shaven on November 1 and then another one on December 1 of their unshaven face. During the entire month of November, the entrant cannot shave at all. If they normally shave their head, they may continue to do so but not the moustache, beard, or neck. The winner will get to determine which local charitable organization the money goes to and will also win a prize package. Participants may sign up at Blue Jay’s Barber Shop and Beauty Bar located at 122 E. Broadway or online at www.iloveenid.com. No Shave November will give way to the Burly Beard competition that will be held toward the end of December. You do not have to compete in either of these to enter the main event in March.
The furry festivities will culminate on March 16th with the city wide moustache competition. The competition will consist of several different categories and will be judged by Josh Ward, owner of Blue Jay’s Barber Shop and Beauty Bar and Dr. John Yeutter, the 2009 runner-up for the coveted Robert Goulet Mustached American of the Year award, sponsored by the American Mustache Institute. Most recently, Dr. Yeutter authored the Stache Act, seeking an income tax deduction for Mustached Americans (a jab at the current tax codes), and participated in the Million Mustache March on Washington DC in support of the Stache Act. Travis Nance, third place winner of the full beard Verdi category at his first World Beard and Moustache Championships in Norway in 2011 and head of the Oklahoma City Beard Club, will be emceeing the event.
Eight moustachioed men around Enid have been chosen as the official “Moustache Ambassadors” and they have each chosen a local charitable organization to play for. They must compete against each other to see who can raise the most money in their “’stache jar” by March 16, 2013, which is when Moustache March, the main city wide moustache competition, will be held. Whoever raises the most money determines where the money goes. To contribute, choose your favorite Ambassador or charity and donate to them. They are:
Chief Brian O’Rourke – Miracle League
Captain Dean Grassino – SPCA
Eric Benson – Booker T. Washington
David McCoy – Woodring Wall of Honor
Frank Baker – Blazin’ Music Group
Robert Barron – SPCA
Father Stephen Samples – Habitat for Humanity
Tim Larsen aka Captain Timothy Barnaby Crum Larsen – YWCA (Enid Buzz is endorsing Capt. Tim)
Because moustaches are considered “gentlemanly,” the event coordinators decided that these shenanigans should be deemed somewhat fancy and encourage dressing for the occasion. Ffor the ladies, they are encouraging the donning of fascinators or fancy hats for the main event, much like they do for the Kentucky Derby. There will be a prize for the Fanciest Fascinator at the March event.
