He attended Parochial school through the eighth grade and graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1943. World War II was being fought at the time so he joined the United States Navy in January 1944, and went to Radio School in Bedford Springs, PA. Mike served as a Radio Operator on three different ships (LCT34, LST 388 and LSM 371) in the American, European and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters. This duty took him to Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, France, Panama and the Hawaiian Islands. Mike’s travels in the Navy caused him to be in some very important places at some very historic times. The death of President Roosevelt found him in Rome, Italy, VE day in Marseille, France, and VJ in New York City. These were places and events known the world over. Few people were as fortunate as Mike in being on the scene for such events.

He received his honorable discharge from the Navy in May, 1946. Mike attended Oklahoma A&M and graduated in June, 1950. While a student there, he met Betty Malone of Enid, Oklahoma. They fell in love, had a long courtship and were married on June 9, 1950.

The couple moved to Enid where Mike was hired by Liberty Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was taught the business by F.D. Campbell who was one of the most knowledgable in the field at that time. He served Liberty for forty plus years, retiring as president and Chairman of the Board in 1991.
