The March of Dimes occupies a unique place in the history of the United States.  The name dates back to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s   personal struggle with polio and his growing alarm at the decades of worsening polio epidemics that killed or paralyzed thousands of American children every year.

In 1938, FDR issued a proclamation creating the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (as polio was then known).  Comedian and radio personality Eddie Cantor was charged with organizing a fundraising strategy for the new foundation.  He made an on-air appeal to the nation to help President Roosevelt fund a cure for polio by contributing dimes for the cause and sending them directly to the White House.  Cantor called the fundraiser “The March of Dimes,” playing on a popular newsreel feature of that era called “The March of Time”.  Within weeks, millions of dimes flooded the White House.

The March of Dimes campaign proved to be so successful that eventually the entire organization adopted the name of its fundraising phenomenon.  Today, the March of Dimes, now known as March For Babies, is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.  With chapters nationwide, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

March For Babies - funded researchers created the first safe and effective vaccines for epidemic polio, and we haven’t stopped defending the health of babies since.  The March For Babies has pioneered genetic research, promoted the B vitamin folic acid to prevent birth defects, fought for lifesaving newborn screening tests, and initiated the regional system of newborn infant care units (NICUs) – and so much more.  The March For Babies continues to do all it can to give every baby a healthy start in life.
