ENID, OK - Several Enid businesses, organizations and residents are making a difference this school year by providing Enid Public Schools with donations for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) supplies.

Don Johnson, a local supporter of public education, spearheaded the campaign after hearing how enrollment in STEM courses has increased, especially at Enid High School. EPS leaders shared with him that, while striving to promote problem solving and the application of knowledge for students, they noticed a need for more materials in the classroom focusing on STEM initiatives.

“We decided to focus on the science labs because enrollment in those classes has expanded significantly in recent years,” said Lynne Peters, Curriculum Specialist for the district. “We know that wanting our kids to learn more interactively requires additional supplies and the community has been amazing in providing these resources for our students.”

By enhancing work that is already happening in programs such as “Project Lead the Way,” a grant-funded project providing STEM courses to middle school students, the donor-contributed resources will allow students at the high school level to have more hands-on experiences, too.

Those who generously have contributed so far include: Dense Mechanical, Enid Education Association, Edward Jones, Robert Sandridge, Chad Dillingham, Johnston Enterprises, Inc., and Oxbow.

Johnson encourages community members to support this initiative as well. Donations may be sent to 500 S. Independence with checks made out to the Enid Board of Education, in the care of Karl White.
