Lindy Ervy Cornelius, Sr.

December 11, 1939 - February 11, 2020
-
Lindy Ervy Cornelius, Sr. was born on December 11, 1939 in Waveland, Arkansas. His grandmother “Nenie” Rogers delivered him in the family farm house, at the bottom of Mt. Magazine. He was named after Charles “Lindy” Lindberg, by his mother who had a crush on Lindberg. His mother’s name was Alene Rogers; she later married Lindy’s stepfather, Arthur Cornelius, who adopted him.
-
Lindy is the oldest of five siblings, four sisters, and one brother. He had lots of great memories growing up with them. Lindy spent his first ten years of his life living in Waveland and Russellville, Arkansas. The family moved to Enid where his stepfather took a job with Pillsbury Mills. Lindy later met a guy named Melvin Barker. Melvin invited him to Bible Baptist Church where Lindy gave his life to Christ. He did join the track team at North Enid, and excelled in sports. He also enjoyed playing basketball, and was good at that as well.
-
In November of 1968, at the age of 17 ½, Lindy joined the Army. His mother had to sign for him because he was under age. Lindy spent forty-one years in the National Guard, receiving his Honorable discharge in 1999. He retired as a Master Sargent, E8.
-
Lindy met his wife George Ann in 1962, at the Waltz Drive Inn on North Grand in Enid, OK. They dated for a short time and married on February 24, 1963. Lindy adopted her two year old daughter, Debbie, and they started their family. They had three more daughters and a son who was a twin. He recalls that his children were well mannered, and raised to respect their elders. Lindy retired from Hackney Iron and Steel in the early nineties after thirty-seven years.
-
Lindy was proceeded in passing by his wife, parents, one brother, one sister, and one grandson.
-
Lindy is survived by five children: Deborah A Winfield (Timothy), Christine L Johnson, Wende M. McKenzie, Lindy E. Cornelius, Jr., and Dawn A Cornelius all of Enid.; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Drucilla Melbe, Lavelle Robertson(Jim) all of Enid, Sharon Kay Miller (Jerry) of Kansas City, MO; seven nieces, and four nephews.
