Johnnie Dean Hisey, age 91, of Tahlequah, formerly of Wagoner & Hunter, OK, passed away peacefully June 21, 2019. Dean was born August 25, 1927 in Hunter, OK, to the late John and Gladys (Cogswell) Hisey.
Funeral services for Dean will be 2:00pm Friday, June 28, 2019 in the Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Gail Edmison officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Viewing is 8am-8pm Wednesday and Thursday. Visitation with family will precede the service Friday, starting at 1:00pm.
Early on, Dean's friends were always trying to fix him up on dates but he wanted to wait for the “right one”. Then he met Waunetta “Nita” Cockrell at a dance in Enid. Not wasting any time with the courting process, they were married August 2, 1958 in Hunter United Methodist Church, which he helped build.
Dean is survived by his son, Brian Hisey and wife, Earline of Wagoner; twin brother, Gene Hisey and wife, Norma of Enid, formerly of Hunter; granddaughter, Kortney Dilling & husband, Tyler, of Edmond and many nieces and nephews. Dean was predeceased by his wife, Waunetta; son, Bruce & sister, Jennie Campbell, of Lamont.

Dean graduated from Hunter High School in 1945. After graduation, Dean farmed and worked on the Union Equity Grain Elevator construction in Enid. Dean enlisted in the United States Army with his twin brother, Gene. They served in 1946-47 in Ft Belvoir, VA. After an honorable discharge, Dean came back to Hunter and continued to farm wheat until 1990. Dean was a substitute rural mail carrier for Garber. Dean worked part-time for the Thompson Wilson Thompson grain elevator in Hunter. Dean faithfully served the Hunter School District and later Pond Creek Hunter School District as bus driver and custodian until his retirement in May 1991. Some of Dean’s special enjoyments over the years were taking a Sunday drive to check the wheat fields and making an educated guess at what the yield might be that year; announcing the home baseball games at Pond Creek-Hunter High School; watching his granddaughter’s softball games and especially fishing and boating on Fort Gibson Lake.

Dean was member of Hunter Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years and also a member of Hunter Lions Club. He was also a proud member of American Legion Post #15. Dean and Nita were members of Hunter Methodist Church.

Back in the heyday of Hunter, Dean and Nita enjoyed hosting numerous dinner parties and other gatherings in their home. He also loved listening to big band music. Dean really enjoyed picking up the kids and delivering that precious cargo to and from school. Dean received countless thank you cards and notes from the kids and parents alike over the years for making sure they were always safe and sound. Dean assisted both sons with their FFA show pig projects and made sure they had the best opportunity at winning the blue ribbon by traveling to purchase the best show pigs available.

Dean enjoyed playing nine-rock at Bob’s Snooker Parlor in Hunter with all the area farmers on those rainy days when the fields could not be worked or harvested.

Dean was a great father figure & caregiver for Nita. Dean didn’t have “sick day” in his vocabulary. Dean was known as a very kind and patient person and would seldom raise his voice. Dean was a fervent gardener of all things, flowers, vegetables and fruits. His gardens were his pride and joy.

Dean was an avid sports fan and listened to Atlanta Braves and St Louis Cardinal games on the radio. He attended all OSU home basketball and football games with his son Brian, while Brian lived and worked in Stillwater. Later in life, Dean liked to attend and watch OKC Thunder games as well as any sports associated with OSU.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Enid Habitat for Humanity or Wagoner Animal Guardian Society (WAGS) with Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home acting as custodian of the funds.
