John Hume Marler passed away on Monday, October 17, 2022, due to injuries he sustained in an automobile accident in July. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 23rd at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Park Cemetery WEST Mausoleum, 4000 Meriwether Road, Shreveport, LA. Father Michael Cannon from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will officiate the service. Local arrangements are under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.
John was born January 9,1938, in Enid, Oklahoma and grew up there as well with his twin sister and three other siblings. He loved sports, especially his Oklahoma Sooners! He played football and baseball in high school and college. He was the first baseman for Cameron Junior College in Lawton, OK, that won the NJCAA National Championship in 1957. After junior college he played running back for the University of Houston and then Stephen F. Austin University. Upon graduation, John joined the U.S. Army where he served honorably for 3 years in both the U.S.A. and Europe. In keeping with his love of sports, John played Service Football as a running back in Germany and France. John met Sue and married her in Norman, Oklahoma. The family later moved to Shreveport in 1973 where John owned a successful business forms business.
To know John Marler was to LOVE him! He never met a stranger. He was always smiling. He could talk your ear off, and you would always walk away laughing. His favorite things were working in his yard all day long and spending time at their condo at Lake Ouachita, Arkansas, over the last 22 years. He never missed one of Chris and Kevin’s ballgames and you were sure to hear him “coaching” from the stands.
John is survived by his wife and love of his life, Suzanne Seeds Marler; his sons, Chris Marler and Dr. Kevin Marler and wife, Carla; his four grandchildren that brought him so much joy, Allie Marler Williams and husband Matthew, Jake Marler and his partner Mary, Hunter Marler and wife Shi, Tucker Marler and fiancée Angelique. Survivors also include John’s twin sister, Joan Sparks; brother, Conrad Marler; sister, Sara Bates; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved black lab, Belle. John was preceded in death by his parents, John G. and Jeanett Marler and his brother Coleman Marler.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Robert Hernandez, Laura Perkins, NP and Dr. Bharat Guthikonda.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Shreveport (stpaulsshreveport.org) or the Veterans of Foreign Wars (heroes.vfw.org).
