Greta Rochelle Lewis Krejci was born on January 3, 1936 in Enid, Oklahoma to Claude and Eva (Root) Lewis. She came into this world as a member of a large family that would eventually number twelve children.
Greta attended school in Enid and also was a regular at church, where she eventually met that handsome Gayle Krejci, the love of her life. On February 27, 1954, they were married and right away started a family. Ricky was their firstborn, followed by Michael, and Lisa. She and Gayle raised a close-knit family through thick and thin, bringing them up in West Side Baptist Church. For over fifty years, she and her family were fixtures at West Side. Her love for our Lord, Jesus Christ knew no bounds, and she loved singing hymns and talking with young people about the gospel.
Greta was passionate about family. Her palpable excitement was infectious at family reunions and functions where seemingly countless brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews, nieces, and Lewises of all sorts, would gather to break bread and tell old stories. Her own family was the pinnacle of her joy.
She loved collecting dolls and preserving family heirlooms for posterity. She will always be remembered as a fantastic cook who would labor lovingly in the kitchen year after year to put on Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations where her favorite people in the world, her family, surrounded her table with love. And, of course, no one could forget her beautiful and delicious cakes that she skillfully created over the many years to the delight of wedding guests and birthday boys and girls. She would take the plain and ordinary and transform it into “Wow, how’d you do that?!”
Greta passed from this mortal life on the morning of October 5, 2016. Her soul now rests with our Savior in the grand halls of heaven where she is lifting her voice with the throngs worshipping God, and fellowshipping with the faithful departed family members who preceded her into paradise.
