Glen Ellison Payne

July 1, 1931 - May 22, 2024

Glen Ellison Payne was born in Enid on July 1, 1931 to Charles William Payne and May O'Brate Payne and passed away peacefully in Enid on May 22,2024. Family visitation will be Monday May 27, 2024 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Anderson Burris Funeral Home at 3002 N. Van Buren, Enid with a graveside service on May 28, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Memorial Park Cemetery at 6405 Memorial Park Dr, Enid.

Glen was born into a large and loving family and was raised Northwest of Enid, attending Carrier schools prior to enlisting in the Army and being stationed at Fort Lawton in Washington. He married Anna Marie Hutcheson on July 26, 1957 and they raised their family Northwest of Breckinridge. Glen instilled many wonderful traits in his 5 kids, a work ethic surpassed by few, an orneriness never outdone, a love of music...listening as well as performing and a caring for family and friends as well as compassion for people, that we don't see enough of these days. Glen formed a custom harvest crew and cut wheat for many years throughout NW Oklahoma, Western Kansas and Colorado. He was the owner and operator of Payne construction and was known for his innovative concrete and construction work, building one of a kind houses around Enid and fabricating the Chisholm Trail markers that he helped to place every mile along the trail clear across Oklahoma. Glen was rarely seen without his hard hat, a cowboy hat or ball cap. Glen is known for eating buttered pecan ice cream with a fork, an endearing trait and very fond memory for his grandson Jeff. Glen was a great instructor of many things, from driving lessons to short sheeting beds and was always up for a cross country road trip with his grandson Nicholas or picking blackberries with Hannah. Glen always lit up when he saw Lynsey come into the room and delighted in sharing Oklahoma history with David, Ora and anyone else who wanted to listen and soak up his wisdom. Glen never met a stranger that he couldn't talk to and find common ground, enjoy a good conversation with and probably find out they knew or were related to some of the same people. Glen always had a marvelous ornery glint in his beautiful blue eyes....

Glen is survived by daughters Peggy Jeter, Barbara Bennett, Karen Payne and son Billy Payne all of Enid. Grandkids Nicholas, Lynsey Payne and Hannah Williams of Enid, Jeff Payne and wife Jessica of Edmond, David Sweet of Francis and Ora Bennett of Coweta. Glen was very proud of his kids, grands and great grands but was especially proud to have his most recent great granddaughter Ellison to carry on his middle name. Sisters, Lucy Webster and Karen Theilen of Enid and Mergie Cochran of Daisy AR

Glen is preceded in death by wife Anna Marie, son Larry, daughter Paula, granddaughter Miranda and sons in law Bobby Jeter and Luther Bennett, brothers Lawrence, Charlie, Barton, Bennie and George Payne.
