Gina Kay Walker passed from this Earth on November 6, 2020, after a ten year battle with colon cancer. Gina was born on September 21, 1963, in Enid, Oklahoma. Gina attended Enid Public Schools and graduated high school in 1981. Gina attended the University of Oklahoma, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1985. After college, Gina worked many jobs from getting her license to sell securities to making donuts at the OU Student union. She also worked in local restaurants as a server and as an actual line cook. Gina decided to go to law school and graduated, magna cum laude, in 1993, from Oklahoma City University Law School.
In 1994, Gina went to work in the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office, where she represented the poor for almost a quarter century. Gina also taught the office’s young lawyers and multiple semesters as an adjunct professor at OCU Law School.
Gina loved her family, her friends, her pets, working in the yard and caring for the home she shared with her true love, Rachel Palmer. Gina and Rachel met in 2008 and married on Halloween, 2014. Gina loved being a public defender and was awarded the Pat Williams Indigent Defender of the Year Award in 2014 and the Robert A. Manchester Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
Gina is survived by her spouse, Rachel Palmer; her brothers, Russell Walker and his wife Julia, Carroll Walker and his wife Vickie, Ron Walker and his wife Ginger; and her niece and nephews, Rusty Walker and his wife Paige, Ryan Walker, Mackenzie Gibson and her husband Josh, Connor Walker and his wife Emily, Ian Walker, Zack Walker and his wife Rebecca, Josh Schultz and his husband Josh. Gina was also blessed with great nieces and nephews, Zoe, Sophie and Sibley Walker, Cole, Bo and Blake Walker, Claire and Wyatt Gibson and Zara Walker.
Gina was preceded in death by her parents, Dayle and Hazel Walker; niece, Stephanie Walker; and nephew, Austin Walker.
In lieu of flowers, please take a friend out for a burger and beer or please contribute to the homeless, Black Lives Matter, ecological conservation or the protection of animals.
