A new law went into effect Nov. 1 allowing the seizure of license plates from uninsured drivers and the ability to assign temporary insurance. Oklahoma agencies did not implement the changes until January 1 as procedures were established.
Before the New Year, officers were only allowed to impound a vehicle, or write the uninsured driver a ticket or warning. They now have the option to seize license plates from the uninsured driver’s vehicles.
A citation will serve as a temporary license plate for up to 10 days. During this time, temporary insurance will be issued at the cost of the driver.
Officials say the local officers will hold the original license plate until the driver buys an insurance policy, and has paid all fines.
About 1-4 Oklahoma drivers are uninsured. State agencies are trying to decrease that number. The fine for failing to comply with the compulsory insurance law is $250.
