The Enid Board of Education is expected to announce this evening that Dr. Darrell Floyd will be the next superintendent of Enid Public Schools. They will reconvene in public session at 5:30 p.m. in the Central Office boardroom to vote on the decision.
Dr. Floyd joins the district after 14 years as superintendent of Stephenville ISD in Stephenville, Texas. His duties with Enid Public Schools tentatively will begin June 1. His selection follows a three-month search that included 21 applicants and eight semi-finalists. Five community members assisted the board with the candidate interview process.
“Hiring Dr. Floyd builds upon the many positive changes Enid schools have seen over the last few years,” Molly Helm, board president, said. “Our search committee was impressed with his leadership, experience and drive for excellence and we know he will lead Enid Public Schools to even greater things.”
Helm also expressed her gratitude to community members, as well as faculty, staff and students who participated in tours showcasing Enid’s newly renovated school facilities.
During his 28-year career, Dr. Floyd has served in many leadership roles across the state of Texas, including teacher/coach, middle school assistant principal, junior high principal and high school principal. His superintendent experience includes three years with Linden-Kildare Schools and 14 years with Stephenville.
Dr. Floyd said his interest in the EPS position stemmed from the district’s commitment to excellence and the amazing support demonstrated by Enid residents to provide a first-class education for its students. He specifically complimented the community’s investment in its schools, including recent renovations and construction made possible through the 2010 Bond Program.
“I am very excited to join Enid Public Schools and the Enid community,” Dr. Floyd said. “I am incredibly impressed with the partnerships that have been built between the district and the community to ensure more opportunities for students and for staff members. It is a great situation to step into as the next educational leader, and I look forward to more success ahead.”
Dr. Floyd earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University, his master’s from the University of Texas-Permian Bases, and his doctorate from Texas A&M-Commerce. He is a Texas Region XI Education Service Center Superintendent of the Year, and he is currently the president of the Texas Association of School Administrators. He is also a two-time American Association of School Administrators National Superintendent of the Year nominee.
Under his leadership, Stephenville ISD and its schools have earned numerous academic and extracurricular recognitions, including the 2012 ACT College Readiness Award, 2013 National Enterasys Technology Exemplary School Award and 2012 3A, Division 1 Texas State Football Championship. Several schools in his district also have been granted “Exemplary” and “Recognized” status by the Texas Department of Education accountability system.
Dr. Floyd and his wife, Dr. Cheryl Floyd, have been married for 24 years and have two children, Brittany and Tyler. They are both students at Texas Tech.
Dr. Floyd said he is excited to join the Enid community and begin efforts to take the school system to the next level of excellence.
“It is important to build on the district’s momentum,” he said. “Together, with support from the community, parents and staff, we will move forward in a way that builds on the success of the past, while focusing on even greater achievements for the future.”
Dr. Floyd succeeds Shawn Hime, who has accepted a position as Executive Director for the Oklahoma State School Boards Association. His last day with the district is March 31. Karl White, Chief Financial Officer, will serve as interim superintendent until Dr. Floyd’s arrival.
