ENID, OK - Tax Day is normally on April 15. That is the day that you should have your taxes files with the IRS. This year our tax deadline is a bit wonky. We have a few extra days to get our taxes filed due to a weekend and a holiday.

When April 15 falls on a weekend, the filing deadline is scheduled for the following Monday, unless that Monday happens to be a holiday. This year, Monday, April 17, is Emancipation Day, which is a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. (That day celebrates President Lincoln's signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act in 1862, which freed over 3,000 slaves in D.C.)

Emancipation Day moves our tax deadline to Tuesday, April 17 at midnight. For those that can't get their taxes filed on time, they should file for an automatic six-month extension by April 17.

You can file for an extension with Form 4868, which gives you until October 15, 2018, to file your 2017 taxes. This is an extension for paperwork only. It doesn't extend the time you have to pay any taxes that you may owe. For this reason, it's smart to make an estimated tax payment before the April deadline, to avoid penalties or interest.
