ENID, OK - Enid Public Schools mock exercise to help local law enforcement prepare for an active shooter situation has been cancelled due to weather.
-
The drill was to be at Emerson Middle School at 10 a.m. on January 4, which is a professional day when school is not in session. Emerson was selected for the exercise because it is a multi-level school that is not currently under construction.
-
“We want to let the community know about this mock exercise well in advance so there will not be worry or concern the day of the event,” EPS Chief of Police Mike Dods said. “While passers-by may see police vehicles and personnel at the school, the drill will be pre-planned, well organized and will not present any danger to those involved.”
-
According to Dods, the exercise will include representatives from the EPS Police Department and the Enid Police Department, both of which would respond to a school facing an active shooter situation. Student volunteers will be involved in the drill as well, waiting in classrooms for help and playing injured people in the hallway.
-
Although the drill’s scenario will be planned in advance by Dods, other law enforcement officials will not know what to expect until the fictitious situation unfolds the day of the event.
-
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our students and staff,” Dods said. “Our efforts to prevent an emergency are critical, but we also must practice what to do in a real-life crisis situation. We cannot allow ourselves to be complacent or naïve when it comes to student safety. This drill, and the information that we learn from it, will help make our schools even safer places to work and to learn.”
