ENID, OK - Enid High School basketball began a new era tonight as the Board of Education approved the hiring of a new head coach for the Pacers and a new head coach for the Plainsmen.

Paul Duncan will take the helm of the boys’ basketball program, while the Pacers will be led by Gerrett Spears. Players will meet their new coaches tomorrow during special team meetings.

“We are very excited to welcome Coach Duncan and Coach Spears to the EPS team,” Superintendent Dr. Darrell Floyd. “It is an exciting time for EHS Basketball, and we believe we have found the right coaches to lead both programs. They have high expectations for themselves and for student athletes – on and off the court.”

Coach Duncan has been a head basketball coach for 22 years and has won a total of 300 games in his career. For the past six years, he has been the head coach at Alva High School, where he accumulated a record of 118 wins and 41 losses. He has additional varsity coaching experience from Wyandotte High School, Wynnewood High School, Oologah High School and Warner High School.

“Coach Duncan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game to this position, and we are excited to have someone with his experience and track record of success leading our Plainsmen basketball program,” Floyd said.

Duncan earned his graduate degree from Southern Nazarene University and his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University. Duncan will teach science at EHS.

Duncan and his wife, Tammy, have been married for 27 years and have three children.

“I am extremely excited to join the Enid Public Schools family and become a part of a bright future for Enid Athletics,” Duncan said.

Coach Spears’ experience includes time as head basketball coach for Weatherford High School, as well as head basketball coach and athletic director for Drummond Public Schools. In addition to coaching at the collegiate level, the Garber native has served as a Director of Basketball Operations for two universities – Wichita State University and Drake University.

“Coach Spears is a young, energetic and enthusiast educator who has a unique basketball background,” Floyd said. “I think his diverse experience both at the high school and college levels will be a great asset to the Pacers basketball program.”

Spears earned his undergraduate degree from Pittsburg State University and his graduate degree from Wichita State University. He will be a social studies teacher at EHS.

He and his wife, Rachael Spears, have been married for 2 years.

“I'm honored, excited and humbled by the opportunity to lead the Enid Pacers basketball program,” Spears said. “It's a dream come true for me to coach in a school district such as Enid. I love what the Enid school district stands for and I am looking forward to helping the young women in the program reach their goals athletically, academically and personally. I am excited to get to work and build on the rich tradition Enid has had in the past.”

Duncan and Spears join EHS basketball just as the district is finalizing plans for a new competitive gymnasium and fine arts center, made possible through 2016 bond program. It is expected to open in the fall of 2019.

Duncan succeeds Kyle Hilterbran, who resigned the position to accept a middle school principal position with Clinton Public Schools. Spears succeeds Jennifer Burch, who is relocating to coach and teach in Rush Springs, where her husband also has accepted a position as superintendent.
