ENID, OK - Enid Pom swept the competition this weekend at the Oklahoma State Dance Team Championship, dancing away with several awards including two state titles.
-
The Enid High School Pom Competition Team earned top spots for their work on the competition floor and the classroom. They were named the 6A-2 Jazz State Champions and the 6A-2 State Academic Champions, for the third straight year.
-
“What an amazing journey this has been this season,” Pom Coach Michelle Hilterbran said. “I am so proud of this team. Their dedication coming into the gym several mornings a week at 7:00, working on halftime routines while preparing for state, and maintaining high academic expectations says so much about these ladies.”
-
In addition to the high school awards, the Enid Middle School Pom Competition Team placed second in the 8th-grade jazz competition. A trio featuring Kalynn Schwandt, Lauren Jackson and Meris Miller also placed second in the intermediate small ensemble category.
-
Kyra Johnston, a senior, also performed as a member of the OSDTDA All-State Team.
-
“We are extremely proud of these students for their achievements – on and off of the competition floor,” Dr. Darrell Floyd, Superintendent, said. “They practice numerous hours each day to become outstanding dancers but they still make time for academics to be their priority. We commend them for this amazing accomplishment – two state titles in one day.”

Hilterbran said EHS has competed at state four out the five years that she has coached. This year’s middle school and high school routines were choreographed by Mykala Irsik, a graduate of EHS and current University of Central Oklahoma Pom Team member.
-
“It is a sweet feeling that Mykala was able to experience this with us, as she was a senior on my first squad on our first trip to state,” Hilterbran said. “We have learned so much since then, as far as what our strengths are and to remain true to our style of dance.”
-
Hilterbran said she also wished to thank the team’s many supporters who gave them encouragement during their journey to competition.
-
“Many thanks to our parents, Coach Bunch, our spirit coordinator, my family for sharing me with my other family and – most of all – to this team, who brought it to the floor and truly earned this title,” she said.
-
The annual OSDTDA state competition, hosted at Oklahoma City University, draws more than 70 teams, as well as 3,000+ spectators who enjoy the competition. The championship recognizes team dance talent in several dance genres including: mix, kick, jazz, hip hop, and pom.
