Whit Freeman

The graveside service honoring the life of Emry Whitson “Whit” Freeman will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday September 9, 2017 in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the United States Army. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. A family visitation will be held Friday September 8, 2017 from 5:00P.M. – 7:00P.M. in the Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

He was born to J. Boyd and Ruth Whitson Freeman December 18th, 1930 in Enid, Oklahoma. He had a wonderful childhood growing up on Hayes street surrounded by lots of childhood friends and family.

He attended McKinley Grade School, Emerson Jr High, and graduated from Enid High School in 1948.

He attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and graduated with a business degree. After a few years living in Colorado working in the clothing business he returned home to Enid to help his older brother run the family trucking business, Freeman Equipment Company.

Whit served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and his incredible math skills landed him the strategic role as a spotter on the 38th parallel.

Whit was a dedicated family member and kept us all entertained with his wonderful sense of humor and amazing stories. He was an avid skier traveling the world to find the best slopes. Music was his passion and his love of jazz led him to clubs all over the Midwest to follow Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Jimmy Rushing.  He was the best dancer in the world.

He is survived by his brother, Boyd W. Freeman, niece, Ruthie Freeman of New York City, and nephew Robert Freeman of Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Enid Public library or to the V.F.W. Post 2270 with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
