Funeral services for Roy Douglas "Doug" Kirkpatrick, 83 year-old Enid resident, will be 1:00pm Saturday, January 16, 2016 in the Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon Tony Crispo will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery with military honors given by the United States Army. Services are under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.
Doug was born May 30, 1932 to John Robert, Sr. and Elizabeth (Belt) Kirkpatrick in Campo, Colorado and passed away January 11, 2016, due to natural causes, in Enid.
Doug graduated from Kremlin High School in 1950 and enlisted in the US Navy in August of that year. He served as a heavy equipment operator in the SeaBees. Then, he spent the next few years constructing the airfield at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was very proud of the fact he could operate any machinery that was presented to him. Doug completed his Navy career in April 1954 and enlisted in the US Army of August of that same year. He was assigned to Fulda, Germany. His Army career sent him all over the world including Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and multiple European countries. Doug’s military awards included two Bronze Stars (one with the Valor device), Army Commendation Medal with the Valor device, six Air Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, three Good Conduct Medals, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He completed his military career on December 7, 1970, retiring as Command Sergeant Major.
Doug proposed to Mary Helen Coakley of Kremlin through the mail and they were married September 1, 1956.
After his military stint, he returned to Kremlin where he worked a variety of jobs, primarily as a salesman for International Harvester and John Deere. In 1971, he helped establish the Kremlin Fire Department. He retired from the fire department in 1996 after serving as Fire Chief for 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years; parents; brothers, John Robert “Bob” and Darryl; and great-granddaughter, Sadie Rose.
Doug is survived by brother, Howard Kirkpatrick; sister, Betty Jo Tennant; three sons, Robert; Tim; Sean; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be given to Disabled American Veterans with Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home acting as custodian of the fund.
