Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Nolan left this earth to paint sunsets in heaven on Aug. 6, 2017 in Enid, Oklahoma, at the age of 92.

Dorothy Mae Broch was born on Oct. 13, 1924 in Springfield, Ill. to Helen Stockton and Cecil Broch. She was raised by John Wilson Ramey.

She graduated from Lanphier High School, Springfield, (Ill.) in 1942 and later attended Brown’s Business School in Springfield, Ill. During World War II, she did peace work in the Sangamo Electric Co. factory in Springfield, Ill. She met William “Bill” Denney at the plant while he was inspecting sonar equipment for the U.S. Coast Guard. They were married in Shattuck in 1945 and lived briefly in south Florida. After the war, they lived in Springfield, Shattuck, and Woodward.

She spent most of her years as a housewife, raising her three daughters. Nolan helped begin the first Girl Scouts troop in Woodward, where she was active in the First Christian Church of Woodward’s choir and women’s group. Her love of singing was something she was active in for decades at other church choirs in Oklahoma and Illinois. She also was an active golfer, bowler, and tennis player and enjoyed years of being a substitute teacher. She was an award-winning artist and taught painting for many years.

After her first husband’s death, she moved back to Springfield, Ill., where she worked for Horace Mann Insurance for five years before retiring.

She married John Nolan in 1998 in Springfield, Ill. They loved to travel and were active members of the Camera Club and the Ski Club.

Nolan is survived by her children, Cindy and Don Mike Brown of Woodward, Nancy and Michael Kalish of Bentonville, Ark., and Marcy and James Jarrett of Enid; Grandchildren Tanya and Eric Ascalon of Cherry Hil, N.J., Brad and Stacie Brown of Georgetown, TX., Justin and Hannah Morgan of Grove, Jason and Julie Morgan of Grove and Lori and Bailey Stanphill of Grove, and Carol Jarrett of Enid, as well as fifteen great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her first husband William Lee Denney of Woodward in 1987; second husband John Berry Nolan in 2001; her parents; and three sisters, Edith Crawford, Helen Thomas, Betty Walsh, and brother John Ramey.

The funeral service celebrating a life filled with love is 10 a.m. Saturday at Central Christian Church with Rev. Jack Weston officiating. Burial will be at the Shattuck Memorial Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nolan’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to the Enid Arts Council or the Golden Oaks Chapel Fund. Anderson-Burris Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Visitation will be Friday evening 6:30 to 7:30, at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.
