Don Haskins, Basketball Coach. Enid High graduate 1948. Don Haskins will always be credited for revolutionizing college basketball when, in 1966, his all-black Texas Western team (now UTEP) upset the all-white Kentucky team coached by Adolph Rupp for the NCAA championship.Haskins had been the head coach at UTEP since 1962 and compiled a 719-353 record. Enshrined as a Basketball Hall of Fame coach on 29 Sep 97. Assistant Olympic team coach (1972) Enshrined in Texas Sports Hall of Fame (1987)
He retired on Aug. 24, 1999. In 38 seasons at UTEP, Haskins suffered only four losing seasons. His record included seven Western Athletic Conference Championships, four WAC tournament titles, 14 NCAA tournament berths and seven trips to the NIT. His victory total ranks fourth all-time. Known as "The Bear," Haskins had led UTEP to 17 20-plus win seasons and a 1992 trip to the NCAA "Sweet 16" following a huge upset of then-number-one ranked Kansas.
Haskins served as an assistant Olympic Team coach in 1972. Haskins coached Hall of Famer Nate "Tiny" Archibald at Texas Western (1967-70) along with Tim Hardaway of the Miami Heat (1985-89).Haskins played college basketball for the legendary Hank Iba at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State).
