Don Eugene Childs, age 78, of Sand Springs passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at his home surrounded by family.
A celebration of life service will be Friday, 2:00 p.m., October 30, 2020 at the Sand Springs Church of God with Reverends Rod Thelander and Rob Raymond officiating. Don will be laid to rest at Woodland Memorial Park Cemetery in Sand Springs. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Mobley-Groesbeck Funeral Service of Sand Springs.
Don was born on December 21, 1943 in Red Rock, Oklahoma to John and Rachel (Daily) Childs. He was Eagle Clan.
He graduated from Red Rock High School and entered the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War Era. After Don was honorably discharged, he returned to Oklahoma and attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah receiving his associates in Education.
Don married Janet Marie Westfall on April 16, 1977 in Sand Springs. The couple made their home in Sand Springs where Don worked for Keystone Equipment for over 37 years retiring as a parts Manager. His wife Janet passed away on April 5, 2011.
He attended the Sand Springs Church of God where he drove the church van to pick up the kids and for the last five years was attending Church of The Nazarene.
Don was an active Tribal member of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe in Oklahoma, where he was a former Tribal Council member.
He was a member of the American Legion post # 17 of Sand Springs, former Green Country board member, was on the pulpit committee for Church of God and the Chain Gang for Sand Springs Football. Don loved spending time with his grandkids, great-grandkids and dog Charlie. Don loved western movies, going to OU Football games with his best friend Bill Cook, buying popcorn at the movie theater and bringing it home to watch his own movies.
He is survived by his daughter, Julia Ann Dixon of Sand Springs, two sisters, Barbara Walton and husband Cecil of Enid, Shirley Childs of Red Rock, four brothers, Henry “Hank” Childs and wife Marie of Enid, Mitchel Childs and wife Mary of Enid, Charles “Cheek” Childs of Red Rock, Robert “Dieter” Childs of Enid and a sister-in-law, Casey Childs of Dallas. Also surviving Don are five grandchildren, Jessica Hayward and husband Chris Mushrush of Kiefer, Kimberlie Hayward and boyfriend Greg Tria of Sand Springs, Raymond Goff of Sand Springs, Doug Clarke and Joe Hacker, seven great-grandchildren, Aiden Hacker, Madison Clarke, Emmalee Tennell, Jaqueline Tria, Skyler, Colbie and Addison Mushrush and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Janet Childs, brother, Johnny Childs, sisters Karel Childs and Debbie Coffey.
