Cowboys, Beatles and Bonfiglio at Symphony Hall

ENID, OK - The music of Cowboys, Beatles and Bonfigio will invade Enid’s Joan Allen Symphony Hall to open the 2018-2019 ESO Subscription series on Saturday October 13 and Sunday, October 14. The opening weekend program will feature internationally renowned harmonica virtuoso Robert Bonfiglio.
-
The program will open with John Williams’ overture The Cowboys, based on themes composed by Williams for the 1971 movie The Cowboys which featured John Wayne in one of his last roles. The Beatles will be represented by Love is All You Need, a Tribute to The Beatles which features 14 of the Beatles greatest hits scored for full symphonic orchestra by American arranger Bruce Healey.
-
Sir George Martin’s Three American Sketches for harmonica and strings will connect The Beatles and Bonfiglio. As children of the 60’s know, Sir George Martin was referred to as the 5th Beatle. His influence as producer of many of the band’s greatest hits led the Beatles to include elements of classical music in many of their recordings. This distinguished their sound from other bands of the era. It is because of his musical influence that music of The Beatles translates so well into the symphonic medium. His Three American Sketches are entitled Westward Look, Old Boston and New York, New York. Bonfiglio will also perform Brazilian composer Hector Villa Lobos’ Concerto for Harmonica and Orchestra.

“I’m especially pleased to be working with Robert once again. He first appeared with the ESO in the 2009-2010 season. Last November I had occasion to work with Robert during a guest conducting engagement with the Oklahoma Community Orchestra. He is a very soulful performer – one who immediately connects with an audience and orchestra, holding them spellbound throughout a performance. Our work last year led me to contract Robert for a return engagement with the ESO. His fondness for our orchestra and symphony hall led him in turn to donate his services as a featured solo artist at last January’s Night in New Orleans soiree fundraiser”.

Robert Bonfiglio’s engagements with more than 350 orchestras around the world include the Boston Pops, New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He has recorded for RCA, Arista, CBS, Sine Qua Non, High Harmony and QVC labels. His is featured on the Grammy winning recording “Ragtime”.

These performances have been sponsored locally by Messer Bowers Insurance, Edward Jones Investments and Al and Kris Vculek.
