Community Comes Together To Show Unity

ENID, OK - The Enid community is coming together to show unity with protesters throughout the country. The shocking video of George Floyd under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer has incited tens of thousands of protesters into the streets nationwide. Organizers have put together several local events to show unity and bring residents closer together.

A town hall meeting took place Thursday evening at the Stride Bank Center. Public discussion was centered around Health and COVID-19 Issues, Issues on Human Natural Rights and Equality and Education Issues.

The event was organized and moderated by Demetrius Office. He wanted to bring residents together to have questions answered and wanted to introduce constituents to their elected officials.

The discussion panel included Senator Roland Pederson, Representative Chad Caldwell, Mayor George Pankonin, City Manager Jerald Gilbert, Commissioner Jerry Allen, Commissioner Derwin Norwood, Commissioner Jonathan Waddell, Commissioner Rob Stallings, EPS Superintendent Dr. Darrell Floyd, Police Chief Brian O'Rouke, NAACP President Lanita Norwood, CDSA Executive Director Cheri Ezzell and Maggie Jackson, Garfield County Health Department.

Residents were invited to submit questions to the panels as long as they stayed on topic with the main three concerns. Several citizens stood before the panel and asked questions about opportunities for Enid High School minorities, police training, systemic racism, racial profiling, red lining and the underdevelopment of Enid's east side.

The town hall event lasted three and a half hours and was streamed live by the City of Enid and Enid Buzz. The full video can be seen HERE

A March for Justice and Unity will take place on Saturday, June 6 at 10:00am. Join the community for the march that will begin at Government Springs Park North. The group will march to the Garfield County Courthouse where there will be speakers.

March participants will then walk back to the Government Springs Park North for more speakers, talks with officials and free food.

On Sunday, June 7 there will be a Peaceful Protest in front of City Hall. Participants will gather around the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at noon. Organizers will speak about the recent death of George Floyd.

A Sunday morning prayer will take place at 8:00am in front of the Enid Police Department. Organizers will pray for a peaceful protest happening later that day at noon.
