The city of Enid held the grand opening of Champion Park on Sunday, July 7 at 11am. There was a great crowd mixed with dignitaries, families and children on hand. The family of Austin Box, along with a few teammates, helped open the park with a blue and white balloon release in Austin's honor.
Whitney Box, sister of Austin, helped design the new park with the assistance of the Austin Box Foundation and the city of Enid, all in memory of the late Enid High football player.
Also in attendance were Eric Benson, city manager and mayor Bill Shewey. Travis & Corey Wilson, two former players from OU, and Casey LaBrue from OSU and EHS was there as well.
The sod around the park was barely completed in time for the opening and there are still a few additions to follow. Currently there are no plans for a fence, although many parents have already raised concerns over that. There will be park benches, tables and canopies eventually surrounding the playground.
The name, Champion Park, comes from the motto "Play Like a Champion TODAY", the park is meant to be a more active and involved park to get kids moving.
The park and splash pad are located at the corner of 10th and Chestnut, where Wilson elementary used to stand.
