An unobstructed view while driving is imperative to the safe operation of a motor vehicle. Probably the most critical component of an operator’s visibility is the windshield, allowing that MOST of the time a driver spends behind the wheel, they are looking through this wide expanse of safety glass.
-
Have you happened to notice on those bright clear mornings while driving East into the rising sun, or on those pleasant evenings while driving West and directly into the setting sun, the difficulty you may have seeing clearly while driving?
-
A dirty windshield exterior, scattered with smashed bugs and bird droppings, can make driving visibility an impossibility at times. This alone can create hazardous driving conditions, without a few drops of rain to complicate the matter.
-
Many times, the primary problem might be the accumulated buildup of “film” that is on the INSIDE of the windshield. This is normally a result of what has built up over a long period of time, and something that a driver just becomes “used” to looking thru while driving.
-
This built-up “film” may be the result of an accumulation of gasses and fumes emitted by the materials and plastics that make up the trim components on the inside of the vehicle (VERY common in imports). In instances where the occupants of the vehicles are tobacco users, smoke may also be a contributing factor. And then, we have the occasional children’s handprints and doggie nose prints.
-
Many times, it takes MULTIPLE attempts of cleaning with a good grade glass cleaner (ammonia base recommended) and a lint-free cloth to remove the buildup and restore that crystal clear view.
-
An ammonia-based cleaner isn’t recommended for after-market window tint. The ammonia will break down and weaken the tint, causing additional problems. This is something to consider if a “high-brow” has been installed on the windshield. In that case, find a very good grade commercially available glass cleaner that is made for use on tinting. Your local tint installer or glass shop can make a recommendation.
-
Another problem regarding windshields in our area is windshield “pitting”.
-
In Oklahoma, we have come to “appreciate” the warm gentle Southwesterly Summer breezes. Accordingly, we have also come to “appreciate” the dust and grit that accompanies those breezes.
-
Oklahoma has an annual average wind speed of 12.2 MPH. This number includes those nice quiet breezes along with those 40+ MPH gusts! With that given, there is NO wonder that our windshields become pitted/sand blasted while the vehicle is just sitting and NOT being driven.
-
Add a 65 MPH highway drive on a windy day in the more sandy areas of Oklahoma, and you’ll come to realize why that windshield looks terrible even after a good cleaning inside and out.
-
Take a moment to evaluate the condition of your windshield. The time spent to consider driving visibility may help when it comes time to pay those insurance premiums!
