OKC, OK - The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced in December its Class of 2023 inductees. The six new members are Dale Cook (mixed martial arts), Sandy Fischer (softball), Chris Lincoln (contributor), Brent Price (basketball), James Trapp (football) and Seymour Williams (contributor).
Brent Price, the former Enid star, played in the NBA from 1992-2002 after being selected by the Washington Bullets in the second round with the 32nd overall pick. A point guard, Price was a member of the Bullets, Houston Rockets, Vancouver Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings. Price spent his first two years of college at South Carolina, then transferred to OU. He was a first-team All-Big Eight selection in 1992 and averaged 18.7 points and 6.2 assists per game with the Sooners.
Only a select few of Enid's sports stars have been inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. Price is the younger brother of four-time NBA All-Star Mark Price, who was inducted in the Class of 2005. Other inductees from Enid include Don Haskins and Ken Mendenhall.
Price said, "It's a rare thing, I feel very, very honored." He now lives in Enid with his wife and kids and has been very active in the community.
The induction ceremony will be held on August 7 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Those interested in attending can purchase tickets at https://oklahomasportshalloffame.org/events.
Founded in 1986, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame became a part of the Jim Thorpe Association in 1989. The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame was started by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, who still serves the traditional role as Master of Ceremonies to this day. The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame is proud to honor legendary Oklahomans' accomplishments and their gratitude and humility. The basic criteria for being accepted as a nominee are accomplishments in sports and identification with the State of Oklahoma. An athlete must be retired from his/her sport for at least five years or be fifty years of age. Nominations are reviewed annually by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Honors Committee to determine who will be added to the list of qualified nominees.
Each year, the selection committee selects a ballot of 20 from the list of nominees. The ballot is submitted to voters all across the nation. The voters include: members of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, statewide Oklahoma media affiliates, former NFL and MLB players, as well as, many other sports personalities. Voters select at least two inductees, while the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Honors Committee selects additional honorees, allowing for special situations and/or exceptions to be made.
