Betty Lou (Hannan) Snyder, surrounded by her loving family, died in Oklahoma City Mercy Hospital on October 13, 2017. She was 89.

Betty was born June 12, 1928, just outside of Mulhall, OK to John and Ethel Hannan. Her parents moved to Orlando where she attended school and proudly graduated from Orlando High School. Betty played clarinet in the band and was an athlete on the softball and basketball teams. She attended annual school reunions through her 70th Class Reunion. Betty was an only child, but made life-long friends who stayed connected through the years. She and two high school friends traveled to Washington State to celebrate their 70th birthdays together. Another high school friend became her neighbor at Green Valley recently where they continued to enjoy remembering good times.

Betty’s ‘only-child’ life changed dramatically when she married Pud Snyder of Lucien in 1946. She became a member of the Snyder Family, much larger, much busier and much noisier than her own. However, she became a beloved member of this family, as relatives were made friends. Pud and Betty made their home in Lucien where family dinners, reunions and holidays became a way of life. She kept up the pace relentlessly. Three children, Jack, Barbara, and Becky were born to this marriage. As parents, they were committed to never missing a school, church or extracurricular event. Family was everything to them. As a couple, they enjoyed square-dancing, dominos, playing pitch, and traveling. They also were loyal followers of the Oklahoma Sooners basketball and football teams. As season football ticket holders, in 1988, they traveled to every single home and away-from-home OU football game. They also vacationed frequently in Branson, a tradition that continued with her grown children after her husband’s death. Pud and Betty were married forty-four years until his death in 1989.

In 1948, Betty joined the First Methodist Church in Lucien where she held her membership until she died. For fourteen years, she prepared the elements for the monthly communion service and was a part of children’s Bible schools for many years. She was a devoted member.

Betty’s most important occupations were being a mother, wife, and homemaker. She excelled at all three. She was a superb seamstress and created most of her children’s clothes. She and her husband raised a large garden and she canned much of the family’s food. They also raised a variety of animals through the years including a calf, pigs, pheasants, and chickens. While raising their family, Pud and Betty moved to Ponca City for one year where they managed the first Sonic Drive-In. She also worked for nine years at Farrell’s Restaurant in Perry and many years on the Noble County Election Board in both Lucien and Perry. Betty volunteered ten years as an Auxiliary Worker at the Perry Hospital and once received Volunteer of the Year. She was a member of the YMCA where she was a leader for the senior swim group. She traveled extensively, enjoying bus trips to Washington DC, the Michigan Tulip Festival, the Rose Parade, the Albuquerque Balloon Festival, Nashville and many mystery day trips. She was registered to travel to New York City in September of 2001, but this trip was understandably canceled. After leaving Lucien, she lived in Perry, then to a Ponca City senior community before returning to Perry to live in the Lodge Apartments before her final move to Green Valley Nursing Home in 2016.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel Hannan, and her husband, Lawrence Snyder. She is survived by children, Jack Snyder of Covington, Barbara Bryant of Edmond, and Paul and Becky Krueger of Blanchard. Betty always loved and enjoyed her 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. All of her family loved and admired her patience, her sense of humor, and her acceptance of each person for who they were. She was very proud of each member of her family.
Services to honor and celebrate Betty Snyder’s life will be Wednesday, October 18 at 2 p.m. at the Lucien United Methodist Church. An opportunity for public viewing will at the Brown-Dugger Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 17 from 8 am to 8 pm. A memorial has been established to the Lucien Methodist Church.
