Artist Painting Mural In Hope Outreach

ENID, OK - Enid is quickly becoming the home to many new public art pieces and artistic murals. Residents can spot several new murals going up on the outside walls of different businesses around town. There are also sculptures being erected around the downtown area.

One mural you may not have seen is hidden inside of Hope Outreach Thrift Store on S. Van Buren. The art can be seen on the north wall as you enter the main doors. It depicts the head of an American bald eagle, an Oklahoma landscape and the hands of four people from different ethnic groups.

Tox Murillo is the mural artist and people around the thrift store call him Chuy. Murillo's uncle invited him to live in Enid after spending time in Los Angeles and Mexico. Since being in Enid he has decided it's a great place to stay and raise a family.

Murillo says he gets his talent from simply practicing his art from. He started out doing graffiti and honing his skills with a spray can. While in L.A. and Mexico he sold his art on canvas's to make money. He mainly uses spray cans or airbrush as his tools and has created many unique designs for cars and motorcycles.

In Enid, Murillo has not had the time or the fan base to sell much canvas art. He says he does paint almost daily just to keep his skills sharp. On this particular mural he is using an airbrush because of the confinement of being indoors.

The design is meant to show unity and how different cultures can join together to make one great nation. The eagle depicts the United States and the landscape shows off northwest Oklahoma. Murillo has not named the mural as of yet but the theme is about being unified and working together.

These days Murillo is busy working and raising a family but he is open to creating custom art pieces for people. He said he would like to make a full time living with his art one day but enjoys the time off every now and then.
