PERRY, OK - June 9, 2017 - A good sized and very enthusiastic crowd gathered at the Santa Fe Train Station in Perry, Oklahoma. People of all ages were there to welcome the Amtrak train as it traveled from stops throughout Oklahoma.

A City to City Amtrak tour took place on Friday, June 9 from Fort Worth, Texas, to Newton, Kansas. The purpose of the trip was to explore the possibility of a passenger route linking to Kansas City.

On Friday, Amtrak conducted an inspection to see the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and explore the possibility of extending Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer north to Newton, Kansas, where it can connect with the existing Amtrak Southwest Chief going to Kansas City.

The idea was to promote support for Amtrak to establish a route from Texas to Kansas with several Oklahoma stops along the way. The inspection between Guthrie and Wichita, Kansas, stopped at former Santa Fe stations in cities along the way. Other stops were at local Amtrak stations.

Amtrak departed OKC at 7:45am, Edmond at 8:15am, Guthrie at 8:30am, Perry at 9:15am and Ponca City at 10:00am. Kansas stops include Arkansas City, Wichita and Newton.

Passenger service stopped in Oklahoma in 1979 due to Amtrak budget cuts. However the Heartland Flyer has served Fort Worth to Oklahoma City for several years. Both Oklahoma and Kansas have lobbied for years for the return of a passenger train.
