The world’s only Delti-loafologist and “Original London Blitz Baby” has passed away at the age of 81-years-old.
The services celebrating and honoring the life of Hugh Michael William Hairs, 81, of Waukomis, will be held Friday, March 18th at 2pm in the Waukomis Christian Church with Pastor David Jones officiating. The services will be livestreamed on the Brown-Cummings Funeral Home Facebook page. Services and complete cremation care are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. The Burial will be held privately in the Waukomis Cemetery.
Hugh Michael William Hairs was born September 8, 1940 to Bernard William and Irene Rose Eva Hairs in Midtown Borough Lambeth, London, England and passed from this life March 8, 2022 in Enid, Oklahoma with his son and best friend by his side.
Hugh was born on the first day of the Great Blitz of London when Hitler and his Nazi Luftwaffe launched Operation Sealion. He was educated at St. James’s Elementary School in Twickenham, Middlesex and at Gunnersbury Grammar High School in the West London Borough of Acton, Bretford and Chiswick. After graduation Hugh worked at Martin’s bank in Richmond. He joined Thames Rowing Club which he enjoyed.
In 1963 while hiking in France, Hugh met a group of “Hippies” and immigrated to the United States shortly thereafter. He lived in San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago, Provincetown, New York, and Miami, Florida before moving to Oklahoma in 1977. He settled in Waukomis in 1984. He worked at Sears and later at a paint store, but his true calling was writing. He published “Hugh’s Review” weekly “By the Grace of God” and was just shy of his 1000th edition. Hugh produced over 300 episodes of the “Postcard Show” that aired on Pegasys. He was a collector of postcards and bread bags, and thus proclaimed himself the world’s only Delti-loafologist. Hugh published “Another Mile Nearer – Sonnets in the Style of William Shakespeare” in 2021. Hugh’s writings and collections are endless and a great source of remembrance and pleasure for his family.
He was a longtime member of the Waukomis Christian Church serving as the church historian for many years and was very involved with Kids Café, where he enjoyed reading to children. Hugh was a member of the Enid Writers Club and enjoyed watching sports.
Hugh became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1994, sworn in at the Federal Murrow Building in Oklahoma City. He was born a Londoner, but he died a proud American and Oklahoman as he loved the Waukomis and Enid communities that were truly his home.
He is survived by his son Bernard and his wife Jenny Hairs, of Tulsa; grandchildren, Morgan, Bryson, and Jaxson; one sister Jennifer, of England, two brothers, Nicholas, of England and Paul, of Australia; two nephews, Richard, and Andrew; and long-time friend and fellow adventurer Harry Kephart of Enid. He is also survived by countless dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be made in his honor to the Waukomis Christian Church where funds will be used to dedicate a library in Hugh’s name to commemorate his years of service to the church, the youth of Waukomis and his love of reading. Brown-Cummings Funeral Home will serve as custodian of the funds.
