Sonya Mae Booher

June 14, 1942 - April 8, 2021

Sonya Mae Booher was born on June 14th, 1942 in Alva, Oklahoma to Arnold and Evelyn Holderby. She passed away on April 8, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. She grew up playing and working on the farm with her sisters Carol and Dana. She was a 1960 graduate of Byron-Driftwood High School. Sonya married Larry Clepper on May 28th, 1961. They lived and farmed the land she grew up on east of Byron. In 1980 they moved from the farm to Burlington. In February 1985, she married Steve Booher. In 2014 they moved to Enid.

Sonya was civic minded and served with many organizations, including the Jolly 20 Club, Lion's Club, and Main Street Cherokee, to name a few. She was the Alfalfa County Assessor from 1988 until her retirement on December 31st, 2010. One of her passions was getting the courthouse in Cherokee ready for it's centennial celebration in 2021. She was the Project Chairwoman of the Alfalfa County Courthouse Preservation Committee, where she oversaw several improvements to the grounds and courthouse. In 2002 she headed the drive to repair and restore the World War I monument “The Spirit of the American Doughboy”, and in 2006 her committee moved the Centennial Wall to a better location on the courthouse lawn.

Sonya is survived by her sister Carol Angle; her children Alan Clepper and his wife Karen, Amanda Barrett, Shannon Booher, Mike Booher and Karla; her grandchildren Samantha and Scott Phillips, Brandon and Angel Clepper, Sandra and Ulysses de la Rosa, Kendall Gamble; and various nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dana, and husband Steve.
