Wilma was born May 22,1927 in Denver, CO to Chester and Justina (Gilmer) Ward and passed away January 24, 2021 in the Greenbrier Nursing Home where she has resided for the past 2 years due to her Alzheimer’s. Wilma was raised by her loving grandparents in Guthrie, OK. She attended school in Guthrie and graduated from Favor High School. Wilma accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a young age at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Guthrie and started playing the piano for the church. Music was her heart and she was a faithful believer. Attending church was very important to her. She married Clason Nolen in 1945 and to this union a son, Clayton, was born in 1947 in Portland, Oregon. In 1948, the family moved to Enid. Later, she married Luther Brewer in 1955 in St. John’s Baptist Church in Ponca City. After Luther was ordained as a minister, he became the pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hennessy from 1972-1991 and Wilma was the pianist. Luther and Wilma co-owned Brewer’s Nursery and Landscaping. When Luther retired from the business, Wilma decided to be a Door Greeter at Walmart, working for 20 years, retiring in 2014. Luther passed away on November 6, 1996. She was an active member of Grayson Missionary Baptist Church, serving as their pianist, directing Grayson’s male choir, and working with the Women’s Mission. Wilma loved to travel with her family to try new restaurants, but she had one requirement, she had to be home before dark. Upon her death she was the oldest member of Grayson Missionary Baptist Church.
Wilma leaves behind her son, Clayton Nolen and wife Varna of Enid, two grandsons, Quincy Nolen of Enid and Bryce Nolen and wife Mariel of Oklahoma City, two great grandchildren, Leah and Bryce II, her cousins Hazel Kimsey, Janet Underwood, and Fenton Gilmer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Miller and sister Virginia Ward. Memorials may be made to Grayson Missionary Baptist Church or OMRF-Alzheimer division with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
