Jumbo Foods Giving Back To The Community

ENID, OK - Jumbo Foods held their 23rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Oakwood Country Club on Monday, August 31. The weather cooperated and the tournament had a full field of players. Gerald Blevins, store owner, said they had almost as many entries this year as they did in 2019.

Golfers from throughout the community play in the tournament including the Enid Mayor, as well as former OU and OSU athletes. Four-person teams began with morning and afternoon shotgun starts. Players competed in the two flights paying first and second place, in addition to prizes for longest drives, closest to the pin and closest approach shot.

Hole sponsors also helped contribute to the local causes. Hole #1 honored Janice Blevins, who helped start the company over 30 years ago. All proceeds from the tournament are donated to various local non-profit charities. Jumbo has given away over a half a million dollars since starting the golf tournament.

Helping out in a big way this year was the Enid AM AMBUCS. The AM AMBUCS crew grilled multiple meats for lunch which was served outdoors behind Oakwood Country Club.

Charities receiving donations included AM AMBUCS, Loaves & Fishes, Our Daily Bread and the Enid SPCA. A special $5,000 check was presented by Jumbo Foods to Eddie Wyant, AM AMBUCS President, to help purchase more AmTrykes.

A brand new, custom AmTryke was also presented to Jim Towes. Therapeutic AmTrykes help give mobility and independence for people with disabilities. The Enid AM AMBUCS has been donating AmTrykes to those in need throughout the region. Kent Clingenpeel, AMBUCS member, said physical therapists contact the non-profit group when they know of a patient in need that is unable to ride traditional bikes.

Enid AM AMBUCS is a non-profit service organization dedicated to creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities. They meet each Friday at 7:00am in the Benson Ballroom of the Stride Bank Center, 301 S. Independence. You are invited to attend a meeting and find out more about becoming a member.

Pat Blevins and his late wife Janice started Jumbo Foods 32 year ago, raising their three children, Gerald, Mike and Pam Huston, to take over the family business. Since then, it has expanded to four locations and added an expanded deli and catering service, direct-from-the-ranch locally produced beef in the fresh meat case and Jumbo’s Express online shopping. Home delivery and in-store wine and spirits have also been added.

The Blevins family has always maintained a strong commitment to giving back to the community through events like their annual charity golf tournament. “We believe in supporting the community that supports us, and we seek to instill that same spirit in our employees,” Gerald says. “Enid is large enough to provide our 312 employees with great opportunities but also small enough that everyone has the chance to get involved and develop their leadership skills.”
