Sharon Ann (Wright) Hume passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning, April 7, 2020. She was 72 years, 11 months, and 29 days old. Her Christmas puppy, Mary Jane, was on her lap; one of her three beloved Free Lions (felines), Daphne, was at her feet. Two more cats, Maris and Roz, and one more dog, Ruth, were nearby, as was her husband.

Sharon was born in Oklahoma City on Thursday, April 10, 1947, the day following the GlazierHiggins-Woodward F5 tornadoes, to Mary Jane (Spratt) and Jake William Wright. She grew up in Weatherford, where she graduated from Weatherford High School in 1965. She was Salutatorian—second highest student of her class. In 1969, she graduated from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She was an English education major. She later earned her Master’s Degree in business education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Weatherford, and became a Certified Public Accountant.

She was employed by Randall & Brownlee, CPAs, Enid, where she rose to become partner. After a merger with BKD, in addition to taxes, she headed up their monthly accounting department. In late 2003, she left BKD. She went to work for Kyle Brownlee and Deane Wymer. In January, 2004, Sharon opened the Enid office of Wymer Brownlee, their first branch office outside of Fairview, with her cherished right hand colleague, Crystal Harmon. Wymer Brownlee now has seven offices across the state of Oklahoma. She considered herself “Junior Mom” to Kyle and Aaron Brownlee, the sons of her esteemed partner, Stanley Brownlee, and his lovely wife, Gail. Her firm was her family until the very end. She loved and cared for every member of the WB team.

On May 1, 1999, she married David Vance Hume. Their good friend, The Rev. John (Lindy) Chambers, performed their wedding ceremony in the original St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church building, now located in Humphrey Heritage Village, surrounded by their families and friends. Their “best persons” were their longtime comrades, Nancy and John Martin, along with best friends, Lala Hatcher and Kathleen Treuil Montgomery. This sextet—“John and Nancy and the Strays” (plus others, from time to time)—cooked and dined together weekly (or more often) for many years.

Sharon and David shared an enjoyment of literature, the theatre, all music, especially jazz, and, prior to her disability, traveling. They honeymooned on Cape Cod, made trips to New York City, Chicago, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Napa & Sonoma Wine Country, Colorado, several spots in North Carolina, Key West, Charleston, Atlanta, and Savannah. They especially enjoyed staying at B&Bs in Eureka Springs, Kansas City, New Orleans, Santa Fe, Taos, Ojo Caliente, Sedona, and Blowing Rock (the fictional Mitford). Many of these B&B or VRBO stays included other
members of the sextet. For one trip to Florida, their family and friends rented an entire B&B with a pool. Almost every trip was peppered with one or more Episcopal church services. David would research to discover the funkiest, most arcane, or highest church venues and Sharon always loved it! A Gospel Procession at St. Anna’s Episcopal Church, in the Faubourg-Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans, where a black, female Deacon joyously sang the Gospel was just one of many standout experiences! NYC, where Episcopalians are not a minority, was a veritable feast for this couple. They both enjoyed the ecclesiastical architecture, history, as well as worship experiences. Sharon and David also loved visiting Frank Lloyd Wright architecture anywhere. They especially loved Oak Park, and Chicago, Illinois, and Taliesin (east), in Spring Green, Wisconsin.

Sharon was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Enid, where she faithfully served on the Altar Guild prior to her disability; she also served as Treasurer, and was currently a Lay Reader as well as a member of the Vestry. She dearly loved St. Matthew’s and her entire church family. Sharon was a longtime member of the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce, where she was Treasurer for many years. Along with her truest friend, Martie Oyler, Sharon was among the first women in Enid Rotary, and was a Paul Harris fellow. She was a member of Chapter DO, P.E.O.

Sharon was preceded in death by her beloved parents, favorite uncle and aunts, and two first cousins.

She is survived by her beloved brother, David William (Diane) Wright, Weatherford; and first cousins, Mary Umbach (Charley) Johnson, Altus; Terry Umbach Lowe, Tyler, Texas; Harold (Carol) Wright, Susan Wright (Winston) Gates, both of Weatherford; mother-in-law, Betty Vance Hume, La Habra, CA; sister-in-law, Sally Hume (David) Cook, Enid; brothers-in-law, Jeff (Francee) Hume, Oklahoma City; and John (Jackie) Hume, La Habra, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Sharon is also survived by her husband, David, of the home; much cherished daughters, Claire Hume (Stan Miller), Stillwater; and Libby Hume (D.F. ) Gaspar, Seattle, WA; and four wonderful grandchildren: Vance Cashwell, Stillwater; A.J. Gaspar, Kate Havice, and Colt Havice, all of Seattle, WA.

Sharon will be interred in the Columbarium at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. The Burial of the Dead with Holy Eucharist to celebrate Sharon’s life will be scheduled as soon as practicable when the church reopens following this pandemic.

In lieu of flowers, Sharon preferred memorial gifts be given in her memory to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, the Enid Symphony Association, Gaslight Theatre, or the Enid S.P.C.A.; Henninger-Hinson will serve as custodians of these gifts.
