Mall Owners Respond To Dillard's Closing

ENID, OK - It was officially announced on Thursday, June 20 that the Enid Dillard's location would be closing in Oakwood Mall. Julie Johnson Guymon, Dillard's Corporate Spokesperson, said, "The current plan is to operate with clearance merchandise until the end of the year with eventually closing it's doors around or after holidays."

Oakwood Mall is owned by a Commercial Retail Group out of Austin, Texas which purchased the property in December of 2016. Commercial Retail Group is a family owned company that currently owns 84 pieces of commercial property.

Todd Routh, founding partner in Commercial Retail Group, said, "We were sad to hear that they are closing. We tried everything to keep them at the mall." Dillard's leases 72,000 square feet from Oakwood Mall which opened in 1984.

Guymon stated, "We strategically close locations across our company and Enid has been selected as one of those stores." She said Dillard's will operate the store as a Clearance Center until its closure around the end of the year.

During the fourth quarter of 2018, Dillard's closed its West Town Center clearance location in Cincinnati, Ohio (115,000 square feet). Dillard's also announced the closure of its Southern Park Mall location in Boardman, Ohio (186,000 square feet). As of February 2, 2019, the Company operated 265 Dillard’s locations and 26 clearance centers spanning 29 states and an Internet store at www.dillards.com. Total square footage at February 2, 2019 was 49.0 million.

Routh said, "We had multiple meetings with national retailers at the international Shopping Centers Owners Conference in Las Vegas in May. We are actively working on recruiting retailers to Enid Mall. We have 84 other properties and we want Oakwood Mall to be of the busiest."

Routh requested any help available from the City of Enid or the Chamber in referring any retailers to Commercial Retail Group. He said they've had multiple tenants interested in opening in Oakwood Mall.
